Using Your Health Fund for Sleep Dentistry in Brisbane

Most of our patients want one thing answered before they book sleep dentistry Brisbane: Will my health fund help pay for it? Often yes, at least for part of it. How much comes back depends on your level of cover and the treatment you actually need.

Here is how it works at our practice.

Claiming on the Spot

We process health fund rebates right at reception, through HICAPS or Tyro. Tap your card after your appointment and the rebate comes off on the spot, so you only pay the gap, if there’s one to pay. We take all the major funds too, including Bupa, Medibank, HCF, NIB and CBHS, which means most people have claimed before they’ve even left, without the paper forms or the wait for a refund.

If You’re with HCF

We’re an HCF preferred provider through the More for Teeth program. If you have eligible HCF extras cover, that can mean 100% back on a range of preventive services, things like your check-ups, a scale and clean, fluoride and a custom mouthguard. Annual limits and waiting periods still apply, and that 100% back is for preventive care, not for sedation or surgery. Even so, it’s a real saving plenty of HCF members never use in full.

If You’re with NIB

We’re part of NIB’s First Choice network too. For NIB members that usually means a smaller gap on common treatments than you’d pay at a dentist outside the network. Mention your cover when we quote you and we’ll factor it in.

What Your Health Funds Cover When You’re Asleep

Here’s the part people get caught out by, so plainly: sleep dentistry has more than one cost. There’s the dental work itself, and depending on what’s done, parts of that can attract a rebate from your extras cover. Then, for treatment in hospital under general anaesthetic, the anaesthetist’s fee and the hospital fee are billed separately and depend on your hospital cover, not your extras. The anaesthetist’s fee usually attracts a partial Medicare rebate, so some of it comes back. Sedation and general anaesthetics are rarely covered in full, so a gap is normal.

The honest way through it is a written quote. Before you commit to anything, we give you an itemised quote with the item numbers for every part of your treatment, so you can ring your fund, ask exactly what they’ll pay, and know your real out-of-pocket cost before you’re in the chair.

Kids and the Child Dental Benefits Schedule

Are you booking for your child? They may be eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS), which covers a capped amount of basic dental over a two-year period through Medicare. There are limits on what CDBS covers when treatment is done under general anaesthetic, so we’ll walk you through what applies to your child before anything goes ahead.

If Your Fund Doesn’t Cover Everything

Health funds rarely stretch to the whole cost of sleep dentistry, and that’s where a few other options come in. You may be able to access your super early on compassionate grounds for essential treatment, either through the ATO yourself or with help from SuperCare. For the gap, we offer Afterpay for smaller amounts and TLC for larger treatment costs.

To book an appointment, give us a call on 07 3343 5006 or drop by our Contact Us page and we’ll put together an itemised quote you can check against your cover.
